Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among cynical hostility, stress, and subjective health condition according to the body mass index in the middle aged women.

Methods: The research design was a descriptive study. The data were collected by a self report questionnaire from 184 healthy middle aged women who visited the health care center of two university hospitals. They were divided into three groups; normal, overweight, and obese group. Data were analyzed by using the SPSS Win 14.0 program with x©÷-test, one way ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression.

Results: There were significant differences in age, educational level, occupation, and family income among three groups. The mean score of stress (11.627¡¾3.441) in the obese group was significantly higher than that in the normal and overweight group (9.984¡¾3.215, 8.829¡¾2.160 respectively). The mean score of subjective health condition (5.137¡¾1.562) in the obese group was significantly lower than that in the normal weight group (5.901¡¾1.405). There were significant relationships among cynical hostility and stress, stress and subjective health condition in the obese group after controlling confounding variables. The stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that stress and educational level (adjusted R©÷=0.192) significantly predicted body mass index.

Conclusion: From these results, it is recommended that a nursing intervention program should be developed to control and manage psychological stress for obese middle aged women.
